Life at Camp
Funston -- Veracity and intimacy warm from this Website as it
offers original words and pictures from a young American soldier encamped in Kansas during
World War I. The daughter of the soldier, Charles L. Johnston, created the these pages.
She points out that, because my dad described his experiences in detail, and because
my mother never threw his letters away, we now have a grassroots window on national and
regional history we otherwise would not have had. As so often happens when knowledge
is showcased on the Web, a study environment is created for many sorts of students. Here
young children can see photographs and postcards to study real people using early trucks
and living in rough tents. For anyone, there is lots to learn from this material about the
life and times in America during World War I. For the advanced scholar there is rich
detail of aspects of army life and facilities of this period.
