American Presidents: Life Portraits --  C-Span started their 41 week series this past week on American Presidents. I had the opportunity last evening to watch their first series on George Washington. This coming week they will cover our 2nd President, John Adams. If you miss the tv show, now you can stop by this excellent designed website for all the information. For its 20th anniversary, C-SPAN examines American Presidents and their "Life Portraits." Use this website to learn more about the personal stories of these 41 men.

William Penn -- Visionary Proprietor  --  This superb study of an important Colonial American uses digital interactivity to support sophisticated scholarship. It explores three facets of William Penn: his position as icon in the U.S. Capitol, his dealings with Native Americans, and his planning of Philadelphia The site makes it clear that the three are not entirely unrelated. Without pushing the interactive envelope, the three subjects comprise three pages, each filled with authoritative discussion and images. The Introduction, which is a fine place for any student to become acquainted with William Penn, has biographical comments and a brief narrative with dates of his life. We learn to know man from points like this one: “Penn did not name his colony after himself (as he feared would be assumed), but after his recently departed father. He had wanted to call the colony 'New Wales' or 'Sylvania' but King Charles II intervened, suggesting instead 'Pennsylvania'. It was the father after all, who left Penn his wealth, including the King's debt to him--which Charles II paid in full with a hefty chunk of New World land.”

CT Women's Hall of Fame Directory  --  Biographical information on Connecticut women, including Marian Anderson, Alice Hamilton, Katharine Hepburn, Madeleine L'Engle, Clare Boothe Luce, Alice Paul, and others. Photographs included.

Michelangelo Buonarroti  --  An excellent biographical resource on the great Renaissance master, Michelangelo Buonarroti! Here you will find a well-written discussion of the artist's life and achievements, supplemented with links to many of his most impressive works.
