Celebrate Earthday (March 12)

ACID RAIN  --   Wonderful online project in which students take the perspective of the environment, history, chemistry, economics, health and government to examine the global issues of this ongoing problem, and it can all be done with just your class right in your own classroom.

AIRNOW - Real Time Air Pollution Data   --  Real-time air pollution data with ozone maps, state by state information, and archives; brought to you by the EPA; slow loading but worth the wait - nice resource for Middle and High School.

Amazon Interactive   --  The geography of the Ecuadorian Amazon through online games and activities; check out the Ecotourism Simulation Game!

Earth Day at Kid's Domain  --  From Kid's Domain, a plethora of downloads, print outs and online features
that can supplement your Earth Day efforts in your environmentally conscious classroom; this is a good place to start, especially elementary teachers.

Seuss Lorax Earth Day Introduction  --  Dr. Seuss's lovable character invites you to play the Save the Trees game
and participate in reforestation by becoming a Lorax helper - great for elementary.   I have even used this book on the high school level in the past and it had a lasting impact on my students.

Clickable Map of US States  --  JAVA appelet of all fifty states; click on areas of interest to learn more about climate in specific regions presented by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

Do your share... Learn about land!!  --  State of pennsylvania site emphasizing good stewardship of the land in its
1999 Earth Day campaign; includes a calendar, links, materials and a dozen html documents for educators on various aspects of the land theme

Earth Day Canada  --   Nice cache of resources covering links, projects, events, a newsletter and the opportunity to peruse and purchase merchandise to deck yourself out.

2nd Annual "Earth Day Detectives" Internet Project!  --  This second edition of this project focuses on water conservation under the auspices of students at Kyrene de la Paloma Elementary School in Chandler, Arizona; the idea is to engage classes around the world in purposeful collection of data on water usage and make use of the statistics in lessons created by the teachers sponsoring the project - no hassles and a big pay-off to boot!

The Earth Day Groceries Project, 1999!  --  Interesting campaign which gets students to decorate brown supermarket bags so that they can be returned to the stores for bagging on Earth Day to promote environmental awareness in home towns across the country.

Earth Day On Your Block   --  Subtitled "a guide for kids from 2 to 122", a nice look at how to organize
a grass roots Earth Day celebration on your block or neighborhood; nice resources list too.

Earth Day Online   --  Hosted by Earth Day New York, this is a current site on upcoming festivities with a state-by-state list and an especially convenient list of educator resources which includes speakers, websites, activities and free materials.

earthday.org -- Make EVERY Day Earth Day!  --  Comprehensive site Earth Day events and activities and environmental resources on the Internet; especially nice set of educator links to agencies and organizations promoting environemntal education.

Earth History Resources   --  Photographs of dioramas, fossils and models, and computer generated images
and drawings designed for use in the development of either an on-line Internet or interactive multimedia project related to Earth History; graphics intensive - nice use of thumbnails to avoid slow loading.

Earth Site Home Page   --  Hosted by earth Day founder John McConnell, this site serves as the rationale and the conscience for the Earth Day impetus he set in motion thirty years ago; some of the content is a little extreme, making the moral imperative of environmentalism equivelant to that of World war II, but a wise teacher can sift out the worthwhile truisms.

EnviroLink Home Page   --  Ecology based site committed to promoting a sustainable society by connecting individuals and organizations; in addition to animal rights and the green living center, the education resources in the Envirolink library is worth a look.

An Interactive Database for use in schools  --  Just what the name says, with sections on Environment, Engineering, a Case study, Aircraft Pollution; check out the "Escape" interactive game! Covers waste management, noise and air pollution, global warming and the ozone layer, water resources, biodiversity and the Eco House.

EPA - Kids, Students and Teachers  --  An Environmental Education Center for teachers, a Student Center and a
Kid's Club, this government agency is right on the money when it comes to Earth advocacy: fact sheets, interactive games, contacts, lessons, projects and grants for teachers.

E-Patrol  --   Ecology-minded site for elementary kids which includes Endangered Alert, Energy Savers, ECOinfo, the E Patrol quiz and an art contest - hosted by Sprint.

Geographia Homepage   --  Virtual destinations around the globe to help your students further experience the physical geography of the world around them (formerly known as interKnowledge).

GEOGRAPHY WORLD  --   Created by Brad Bowerman of Lakeland High School, he claims to love geography and this site is living proof! Great array of links to help you tie in Social Studies to your Earth Day activities.

Professor Polar Bear (ARM Education Site)  --  The U.S. Department of Energy hosts this site for elementary children, with the help of Professor Polar Bear and a variety of involved activities - the topic is global warming approached through a quiz, a question of the week, ask a scientist and a number of environmental links.

3G on W3: The Great Globe Gallery on the World Wide Web  --  More than two-hundred images of the Earth showing everything from global snow and ice caps to corals and mangroves to global water quality - beautifully done.

Kids' Clubhouse: Green Room: Greenpeace USA  --  Greenpeace's contribution to environmental consciousness on the Web for kids featuring Kids Count, Amazing Earth Facts and Stella the Sea Lion Coloring Poster.

The Learning Web at the U.S. Geological Survey  --  USGS site for students and teachers to promote education in Earth Science and environmental topics; the Land and People project does a fabulous job
of comparing and contrasting ecosystems in L.A., Cape Cod and the Florida Everglades.

March for Parks: Celebrate Earth Day - Save a Park  --  The oldest Earth Day activity going in which marchers raise monies which are used locally for public park projects; the 1999 informational brochure can be requested through this site.

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) K-12 Science Education site  --  K-12 education initiatives designed for teachers and students; lots of ideas including the K-12 Instructional Material Development, the K-12 Teacher Enhancement and Development and Science Fun for Kids & Other K-12 Links.

One Sky, Many Voices  --   From the University of Michigan, four-week and eight-week programs centered
around environmental science themes. innovative, inquiry-based science programs that utilize current technologies; sample offerings are Hurricanes '98, Kids as Global Scientists '99, and Shared Air '99.

Our Changing Earth @ The Franklin Institute  --  Franklin Insitute presentation on such varied earth-related topics as Shamrock Lane, El Ni�o and La Ni�a: What's the Difference?, Basic Oil Primer, The Delaware Estuary, A Journey II the Center of the Earth, and the Rock Hounds.

Tropical Rainforest in Suriname  --  A multimedia tour of the plants, animals and people of this remarkable place in a multilingual format with a separate viewing window for images in the slide show - quite elaborate!
